Today marks an exciting milestone — Fair Onboarding Alpha — where the first zkEVM on Ethereum is finally lifting the gates to let registered projects deploy on mainnet.

Before we go any further, we want to take a moment to thank our community for their unwavering support in helping us make it to this milestone. We’re proud and humbled that you’ve been with us every step of the journey.

We’re also excited to announce that:

  • We’re now full open source with the freedom to view, modify and fork the code, as promised
  • zkSync 2.0 is now zkSync Era∎, and zkSync 1.0 is now zkSync Lite

Next stop: Full Launch Alpha.

zkSync 2.0 is now zkSync Era

With this new milestone, comes a new look and feel. Today, we are thrilled to announce that zkSync 2.0 has been renamed zkSync Era∎

zkSync’s mission is to accelerate the mass adoption of crypto for personal sovereignty. That means that we need to scale Ethereum while preserving its valuable properties, by building a technology thousands of developers and millions of people want to use.

As we look to the future and continue to build partnerships that onboard native and non-native users alike, we’ve chosen a name that represents a new phase in crypto adoption. A name that:

  • is simple and universally understood
  • has broad appeal and wide applicability
  • speaks to our vision for a new era of Ethereum.

This is why we chose Era.

We also wanted to create a clear distinction between the two versions of our Ethereum scaling solution. As such, zkSync 1.0 will now be zkSync Lite.

You are here: Fair Onboarding Alpha

Today, we’re taking another big step toward the end-game for scaling Ethereum. We’ve arrived at Fair Onboarding Alpha, where we welcome projects that have registered to launch on zkSync Era. Fair onboarding is designed to be equitable, so we are welcoming registered projects at the same time, giving all teams an equal opportunity to deploy.

Mainnet will remain closed to end users during this stage. This is so that teams can deploy and test their applications in a closed environment before the system is opened to external users.

During Fair Onboarding Alpha, we will:

  • allow registered projects to deploy and test their dapps on zkSync Era
  • enable token bridging, with limited use for testing and deployment purposes
  • continue running security audits, contests, and bug bounty programs
  • improve developer tools, including plugins, documentation, tutorials and FAQs.

zkSync Era is fully open source

We are excited to announce that zkSync Era is free open source, as promised, under MIT/Apache 2.0 license. Being community owned is part of our mission, and we couldn’t take an approach other than making our code opened. Our zkEVM has been live on testnet for over a year and on mainnet since October, and has been through lots of testing and audits. We are now confident that its code is ready for the eyes of the public and would love to hear our community’s suggestions.

We believe anything but full open source is a form of censorship, and that open sourcing the technology will help accelerate mass adoption of our ZK-rollup and establish zkSync Era’s zero-knowledge prover as the gold standard.

During Fair Onboarding, our partners will also help to further test the system, and we will continue investing in audits and bug bounty programs, re-ensuring our commitment to security. It’s important to remember that we are still in early days of the protocol. Security remains our top priority. We don’t recommend forking the code yet until the Full Launch Alpha, as it could potentially lead to missing critical security updates.

New roadmap coming soon

Now that we’ve arrived at Fair Onboarding Alpha, we’ll be updating our protocol roadmap and publishing an overview of the next milestones. We’re committed to being transparent around the milestones that make up the mission so that you can hold us accountable.

We’re grateful to the researchers, developers, and community members who help us accelerate the mass adoption of crypto for personal sovereignty. We look forward to seeing what Fair Onboarding Alpha — and beyond — has in store for zkSync Era.
